World News Day

World News Day 2019 is a celebration of the power of journalism. We are proud to be a founding partner of this annual opportunity.

World New Day has been designed to amplify the value of journalism around the world, where truth is under attack, trust in the media is in decline, and the spread of misinformation has never been faster.

On 3 May 2018, the Canadian Journalism Foundation took a moment to pause and celebrate the good and important work that journalism does in the world.

The CJF launched the first-ever World News Day with inaugural events in Toronto and Montreal featuring journalists and citizens. All shared stories about the power of journalism and how it created positive change in their lives and communities.

In December 2018, our founder Solomon Elliott suggested to Google News Initiative and the Canadian Journalism Foundation that The Student View launch World News Day’s UK celebrations on May 2nd 2019, the eve of the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which underscores the importance of a free press.

The first World News Day celebration in the UK will be launched by The Student View, Google News Initiative, YouTube, The Guardian and ITN.

World News Day’s first-ever News Talks event will take place at YouTube Space London. During this special editorial conference, TSV journalists will share their thoughts about what issues matter most to young people.

Together journalists and schoolchildren will design new approaches to make the news more relevant for younger audiences.

World News Day celebrates the stories, the people, the reporting and the professional news organizations that are dedicated to changing lives, challenging the status quo, holding those in power to account and supporting freedom and democracy.

We’re inviting newsrooms and industry bodies around the world to put their support behind WND and take part in a global movement to celebrate the power of journalism.
