Taekwondo is the art of self-defence.
It originated in Korea and is widely recognised for it being one of the oldest forms of martial arts, going back to 2000 years ago. It also features in the Olympics.
The name itself explains the sport: Tae meaning foot, Kwon meaning hand and Do meaning art. It is a way of life for many people, due to the positive effect it has on them.
Positive effect 1: It builds confidence
This may seem cliché, but it really is true: taekwondo makes you stronger mentally and physically. You start out shy but after a few lessons you will instantly feel empowered: this I know from personal experience. Trust me, you will feel absolutely amazing. You create a new world for yourself in which you are capable of being who you really want to be, and it comes through in your everyday life.
Positive effect 2: It gives greater self-esteem
Your self-esteem will go through the roof as you’ll be more aware of your mental powers and can escape your past, as you’ll simply feel free. Free of your dark times and low moments. This is due to you being assured that you will be able to defend for yourself no matter what the situation, and that you will not need to live in fear.
Positive effect 3: Helps you develop discipline
One of the first things you are taught is the basics of taekwondo; discipline and respect. For example; if you are a higher belt or a lower belt you still have to both follow the same rules to respect each other.
Positive effect 4: Inspiration, for yourself and others
If you have felt that you have been locked up because of certain things that you are being segregated for, use it to gain power. Do exactly what society doesn’t want you to do, and be the success you want through Taekwondo, tackling these roles and the rules they have set. Little would you know that you might become a role model for many who want to strive and take the same path as you.
