Openreach engineers are “strongly advising” people to stop throwing shoes over telephone lines.

It is unclear what are the reasons behind this phenomenon but some believe shoes are thrown over telephone lines to signify a drug dealer’s house.

It is often seen as a harmless prank but the company responsible for the infrastructure is warning against this past time that can “cause substantial disruption”.

An Openreach spokesperson said: “We strongly advise against anybody interfering with any part of our network.

“Not only could they injure themselves, but they could also cause substantial disruption to telephone and broadband services that people rely on.”
