Who is the programme for?

Our fellowship  is open to anyone between the ages of 16 and 23 who is interested in media and storytelling, regardless of their background or experience level. Whether you’re a seasoned blogger, a budding filmmaker, or just someone with a passion for sharing stories, you’re encouraged to apply!

This programme is especially committed to providing individualised support to the cohort. If you identify as someone who is not currently represented in the media or industry, we want to hear from you!

Is the aim of the programme to help remove barriers to entry for underrepresented young people in the journalism industry?

Absolutely! The New Creator Fellowship aims to tackle the stats provided in the 2022 Diversity in Journalism report issued by the NCTJ, showing that journalists in the UK are more likely to be from white ethnic groups, have a degree level qualification and have a parent who has worked or works in higher-level occupation.

Our fellowship aims to tackle this and support a of 30 diverse new talent in year one into industry by:

  • Prioritising applicants from the underrepresented groups in industry
  • Providing a fully funded programme including travel costs for in person sessions
  • Delivery of the NCTJ’s Certificate in Foundation Journalism course, recognised by media outlets and organisations, accessed virtually
  • Programming speakers, guest sessions, workshops and work placements to broaden perspectives, share knowledge and spark curiosity
  • Supporting young people to build skills, foster new networks and instil confidence in abilities to pursue a career in journalism
  • Providing learning experiences and networking opportunities virtually as well as in person

Each week you will cover topics like storytelling, recording and gathering information, how to use audio, learn about the ethics and legal aspects of the industry as well as the power of video .
